The Birth of Jesus Christ

There has been much discussion surrounding the birth of Jesus through the years as stated in our introductory article the date of 2 B. C. will be used for the birth date of Jesus. If you disagree then add or subtract from the dates in this article to arrive at yours.

Jesus was born in the fall/winter of 2 B.C., in Bethlehem, Luke 2:1-20. This was foretold years earlier (Micah 5:2). His name was to be Jesus (Matthew 1:21; Isaiah 7:14; 9:6). He would be born of the Hebrew people (Genesis 12:2) and of the tribe of Judah (Genesis 49:10). He would be born into the family of David (2 Samuel 7:16-17). His parents would be the virgin Mary (Isaiah 7:14; Luke 1:27-35), and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20; 1:22-23). The record of the lineage of Jesus is recorded in Matthew 1 and Luke 3.

The angel of the Lord announced the birth of the Savior, Jesus Christ, to the shepherds, telling them that on this day, in the city of David's birth, Bethlehem, a Savior is born, which is Christ the Lord (Luke 2:11). Later, when the wise men found Jesus, they fell down and worshiped Him and gave Him gifts (Matthew 2:11). In the coming millennial reign of Christ, as this foreshadows, all nations will come before Him and Worship Him (Psalms 86:9; Isaiah 66:23; Zechariah 14:16-19). Old Simeon, a good and righteous man, also recognized Jesus as the Savior, Luke 2:30-34.

After the visit of the wise men God warned them in a dream not to return to Herod so they departed into their own country another way (Matthew 2:12). When Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him it was safe to go back into the land of Israel. Joseph took Mary and Jesus to Nazareth (Matthew 2:16-23).

Nothing further is known about Jesus' childhood until He is 12 years old and is going with His parents to the Feast of the Passover at Jerusalem. As they were returning home they found that Jesus wasn't with them. They went back to Jerusalem to find Him and after three days they found Him in the temple with the doctors, both hearing them and asking them questions. Everyone that heard Him were astonished at His answers. Then Jesus went back to Nazareth with His parents (Luke 2:41-52).
