Saturday of the Final Week

Jesus arrives in Bethany, six days before Passover, at the house where Lazarus had been dead and was raised to life again. As they shared a meal, Mary used expensive perfume to anoint Jesus' feet. Judas Iscariot was upset, because he could have stolen it for himself and said that it could have been given to the poor.. Jesus told him to let her alone because she was doing this in preparation for the day of His burying. In their culture, large sums of money were spent on funerals, including perfumes to cover the smell of the decaying body. Jesus left Bethany for Jerusalem (Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; John 11:55-12:8).
